Irene's Brief History

After Irene graduated from college, she spent the first part of her working career, during the early 1970’s, working on the London Stock Exchange Floor as a Blue Button/Dealer for Stockbrokers Rowe and Pitman and Pike and Bryant.  Irene was presented to the Queen, when Her Majesty visited the City of London in 1974.  Her Majesty spoke to Irene because she was only one of the two females allowed on the Stock Exchange Floor at that time. Irene was invited to many functions including one at the Mansion House for a dinner with the Lord Mayor of London, who was at that time, Sir Peter Vanneck. She married John Yarrow on the 17th May 1975 in Wanstead, London, then after 4 years of marriage she became pregnant in 1979.

She gave up her career in the City to bring up her only child, Elise. The Yarrows settled in Billericay and Irene became involved in the Catholic Playgroup because she had an immense love for children and was always laughing and encouraging them. Irene had a fantastic gift for nurturing children; their own daughter is testimony of that gift. She also had a happy, easy going nature and could converse with anyone, and make them feel at ease. Despite her own deteriorating health, she would always ask after others and advise accordingly.

Irene also did a lot of charity work while she had cancer including running in the Cancer Research UK’s ‘Race for Life’ many times. Irene also helped out at St. Peter’s Primary School, as a Teacher’s Assistant. She worked at Mackays, in her local High Street, but finished her working career working for the money travel company, Travelex, in Billericay, sorting out currency coins and notes etc. Later, she became responsible for the security for their ATM machines and dealt with issues involving vandalism and robbery etc., and often liaised with Scotland Yard for the ATM security issues. She retired from her working career on her 60th birthday in 2007.
